What is Holding You Back From Your Personal Development?

Personal Growth and Development

Nothing is worse than having big dreams and visions for yourself but can’t seem to get anywhere.  Unfortunately things that you are doing might be holding you back from your own personal development.  There are four huge barriers that you face that could be holding you back from acheiving what you want.   They can keep you from developing into the person you want to be.   Learn to conquer these things and you are going to push yourself closer to your goals.

There are many barriers to personal development but the four I want to talk about today are habits, time, motivation and attitude.   If used correctly these four things can work in your favor and aid in your personal development  success.

Habits: What habits have you gotten into?  Are the habits that you practice leading to your success or failure?  It is easy to fall into bad habits because they are part of your routine, comfortable, and feel safe and secure.   Bad habits can hold you back from growth and can hinder your personal development.  In some cases bad habits are so ingrained into who you are, you don’t realize that  they are robbing you of your dreams. Getting into a routine of good habits is imperative to personal development.  Try to figure out your goals and what habits will help you reach those goals.  To form a habit it takes repeated effort.  You will need to practice and do something over and over until that habit is formed.  To keep from being held back in your personal development you have to pin point and do away with unproductive habits.

Time: We are all given the same amount of time.  It is what you do with it that counts.  One of my favorite quotes from H. Jackson Brown puts it like this,“Don’t say you don’t have enough time. You have exactly the same number of hours per day that were given to Helen Keller, Pasteur, Michelangelo, Mother Teresa, Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Jefferson, and Albert Einstein.” If you use your time in unproductive ways it will hinder your personal development.  Finding ways to manage your time effectively is crucial to your success.   Learn to schedule your time, get organized and have lists of things you need to accomplish.  Avoid procrastinating and time wasting practices.

Motivation:Finding motivation can be a challenge.  Sometimes it can be so hard to find the will to simply getting going.  You can have the best intentions in the world but without the motivation to actually do it you won’t get anywhere.   Keep striving to stay motivated and avoid procrastination.  You might have to battle with yourself because it is easy to say you will do something later.  Sometimes you will need to assert your will to get going  and push yourself to stay motivated.

Attitude: Each day we all choose the attitude we are going to have.  What will be our attitude in good times and in struggles?  We all face challenges and it is your attitude toward them that will determine your personal development.  Carrying out big things in life is nearly impossible if your thoughts and words conflict.   Taking time to assess your attitude is important both to your well being and personal development.  It might take work and maintenance to make a shift in bad or indifferent attitudes.   If you can practice changing your attitudes even a little bit at a time you will be taking steps in the right direction.  Try to feed your mind positive things and surround yourself with positive people.   Stay accountable to yourself by keeping your attitude in check with the goals you are trying to achieve.  Seek  people, books and resources that will help you stay positive.

I would love to hear what things help or hinder your personal development.  What did I not include here that you think holds you back?  What did I not include that has helped you in your personal development?

One realization I had was about time. I kept hearing that you needed to “balance” time with everything else you were doing in your life. The real issue was choosing what you did with your time. Because, as you write – we are all given the same amount of time. Nice article…:-)

    Angela,
Great points to check on to see if you are moving forward as planned. Letting obstacles or issues step in your way is not a good thing. Keeping track and balancing it all will give you the space to create and discover.

Thanks, I needed to hear this today,

    Hi Angela,

I agree with you well described points of habit, time, motivation and attitude.

Attitude about all of those has a huge impact. The way we think about things effects the way we feel and if we don’t feel good about it, it is hard to shift.

Thank you for writing this. Much appreciated.

  6. This is an excellent post Paige! Thank you!

It’s funny, because I was just realizing some of these things the other day! One thing I need to do is de-clutter! I think that has become one of my bad habits. It’s not like I have a messy house, but I have 2 spots, one in my kitchen, and one in my office, where I just pile things up, and don’t deal with them or put them away. I know what is in those piles, but it’s messy all the same. So, my chore for this weekend is to clean up and deal with those piles. A cluttered house = a cluttered mind … therefore, a CLEAN house = a CLEAN, and ready to rock ‘n roll, mind! :)

Hey Lorri! I know how quickly clutter can add up. It is something you have to stay on top of or it can get out of control. We have had that happen a few times at our house too. I agree having a clean house helps to have a clean mind. Thanks for your comment!

Angela, I enjoyed reading this post today.Habits, Time, Motivation, and Attitude are all factors that can limit our success due to lack of Personal Development. However, at the same time, if intentionally worked on (via reading and engaging in personal development audios or books), the same factors … positively engaged can lead us to designing the life that we truly desire to live. Thanks again for sharing. I look forward to reading even more of your future posts. Life is great! Sye-

  11. Hey Angela,

Personally I think the biggest reason why people don’t take the time to develop themselves is because of their past conditioning. They were raised to believe that they weren’t special nor could they contribute anything of any real value to the world.

I heard a story the other day and a friend that I have in Australia told me about this term they use to describe this and they call this “Cutting The Tall Poppy”. Typically poppies tend to grow all at the same height however, every so often there is one poppy that grows far above everyone else. What farmers do though is that they cut down the tall poppy so that it’s the same height as everyone else.

When he related this to our society, I was amazed at how often this happens in our everyday lives. How often have you heard about some kid that is absolutely brilliant and stands out above other students but then is criticized then just comes back down to being average?

It’s a sad thing however, I think the biggest thing to realize is that we are all powerful beyond measure and that everything is possible.

Great post Angela :) Keep up the great work!

  13. Hi Angela,

thanks for this inspiring post. It seems to me that motivation, true motivation, is the starting point. Only strong intrinsic motivation, our core why, will be strong enough to change habits and attitudes that are in our way to success and fulfillment in our lives.

    Take care

  14. I think the biggest thing that holds me back is negative self-talk, the habitual thoughts / commentaries that follow up the ideas for the changes I want to make. A great way to deal with motivation challenges is to have an accountability partner. Find somebody who you can talk to on a weekly basis who will hold you accountable for getting things done.

  16. I think that there are a lot of reasons people do not move forward in there personal development. Habit, time motivation and attitude are certainly big reasons.

One thing that I have found is that no matter what kind or amount of personal development a person does if they continue to seek peace, love and understanding outside of themselves they are looking in the wrong direction.

We were all made to be peaceful in and of ourselves, then life happened and we have moved farther and farther away from that. What you are looking for you already have. Deep within you is the peace and wholeness that you were born with. Seek that peace within!

    Peace…

  17. I love you you broke down these four areas. I also think that it is important that you included habits. It’s essential to take a look at these because it is so easy to allow them to run without any conscious attention which can end up wasting a lot of time and energy or even being destructive.
