Ways to Bring Traffic to Old Blog Posts

blog traffic to old blog posts

It is hard to put time into creating a great blog post, only have traffic seeing it for a couple days and then have it forgotten when the next blog post goes live.  It doesn’t have to be that way, there are ways to bring traffic to old blog posts so you always have a good flow of traffic.

Here are 5 ways to get new traffic to old blog posts

Periodically do a best of post linking to your best pillar posts.  This is a great way to get traffic to your old blog posts.  It is simple to do and a great idea for when you are stuck on ideas for new posts.  Simply have a link along with a few sentences about each post and you’ll be breathing new life into those old posts.

Do a topic post.  Similar to the last suggestion but here you offer recommendations for reading all your posts on a certain topic.  This gets readers that are interested in a certain niche staying on your blog for a while.  It is good to have traffic sticking around on your blog  both for building trust with the reader and because Google likes when people spend time on your blog.

Use a Related-Posts plugin.  There are a lot of  WordPress plugins that help you share related blog posts.  You can choose one that shares the posts at the end of each entry or one that shares your most popular posts in  in the sidebar.  I use a plugin called WP Related Posts that shares my related blogs at the end of each entry.   For my sidebar I use a plugin called Most Commented Widget  that shares old blog posts that have the most comments.

Share old posts with your e-mail list. If you are building a e-mail list you know what readers like and what content interests them so don’t miss sharing old posts with them.  Let your e-mail list  know about a specific older post that could benefit them.  This can send a considerable amount of traffic to old blog posts and it builds more credibility with your list as you are providing valuable content.

Mention links to older posts on Twitter.  There are several ways to tackle this.  You can manually share old blog posts on Twitter or you can use the plugin called Tweet Old Post.   I use Tweet Old Post because it allows old posts to automatically be posted to Twitter at any interval I choose.  So if I want to Tweet an old post once a day or once a week the plugin does it on autopilot.

There’s no reason to let your older posts go to waste and miss traffic to old blog posts. Proudly dust them off and use the above techniques to leverage them.

I would love to hear your comments, do you have other techniques to get traffic to old blog posts?
