How To See Challenges As Opportunities

Do you find that you are a person that hates challenges and obstacles or do you embrace them? I used to hate challenges in my life and think, “why me,” or something along those lines and get a really bad attitude about the difficulty I was going through.

I have learned to change my mindset and mentality I have come to embrace challenges. I see challenges and obstacles as a way to learn, grow and really appreciate it when good things happen. There is the old adage that nothing good comes easy and I think that is true. When things are just handed to you it is harder to have an appreciation for them. I look at the things I have worked hard for or challenges I have overcome and I feel a sense of pride in what I have achieved.

Sometimes I like to think of challenges and opportunities like rainy and sunny days. Rainy days are gloomy and not a lot of fun most of the time. But rainy days are neccessary. Because of the rain plants are watered, grow and become stronger. We then appreciate the sunny days so much more. Like rainy days challenges are not a lot of fun most of the time but they help us grow and become stronger. Like sunny days we then appreciate the good times so much more.

Challenges make us look for new ways to do things- Like Michael Jordan says, “Obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.” Challenges and difficulties may sometimes stop us in our tracks and keep us from moving forward. If you want something bad enough and you hit a brick wall you can’t let that stop you. There is always more than one way to accomplish something, so keep trying new things until you get what you want.

Challenges make us stronger-”” Difficulties are meant to rouse, not discourage. The human spirit is to grow strong by conflict.” William Ellery Channing We grow stronger by going through challenges. As much as it can be unpleasant to go through tough times you can learn and grow so much from those experiences. If you can shift your attitude when you are have difficulties you can look at the situation and say, “What can I learn from this?” You can learn to see it as an opportunity to grow.

Try not to think of challenges as a means to an end, but a new beginning.
Look for ways change your mindset, get determined and tackle challenges head on.

I would love to hear what challenges you have faced and how they have transformed you.  What opportunities did you find when you faced those challenges?  Leave me a comment below.  If you know someone that would benefit from reading this please feel free to share it with them.

    Angela,
This post really resonates with me! I traveled along the same pathway and mindset for many years. I understand how this can constrict and hold you back. Thank goodness I opened up to discover a new, more empowering mindset.

The opportunities to grow and learn appear every day for me. I will never head back down that old pathway again!

haha!! Nelson beat me to that line!

How we approach challenges will determine how we leave them. Some people seem to have the same challenge over and over again… that’s a sign of not taking them on at all.
Some have challenges persist. That’s a sign of negativity toward them.
Some break through and face new challenges all the time. That’s a sign of growth. :)

  6. Great post Angela! By chance, I’ve written a similar post today about how our children need challenges, and less hyper parenting. You are so right that we are proud of the challenges we overcome, and it build confidence as well. I love the rainy day analogy; many children are being raised without near enough rain, and the results in college and the workplace are scary!

Thanks again for another insightful post!

Great statement and so true. We have a tendency to give up just when the next step equals success!!

  8. Hi Angela,

Excellent post! I’m a big sports fan and love using sports metaphors with my business. Athletes devote thousands of hours into practice to get ready for the big games and they face constant challenges and setbacks. Entrepreneurs could learn from their mental toughness. Challenges are indeed opportunities for growth :) .

  9. Great post, Angela! There is much to be learned from every challenge we face, and the ability to shift from why is this happening to me, to how can i solve this, what can i learn here, and how is this going to result in an even better outcome than initially envisaged, is indispensable.

Hi Aidan! Absolutely, we must learn from our challenges to grow and become successful. Anyone who has become a huge success most likely has had to overcome many difficulties to get there. I think a lot of times the difference between those successful people and people who don’t achieve success is hugely successful people don’t let failure get in their way. They keep trying when they fail and learn from their mistakes.

    Angela,

this has been one of the hardest lessons for me to ‘grasp’ but one of the most beneficial.

It’s better to say “Ok, that happened. Now what am I going to do about it?” as opposed to ‘wallowing’ in it and having my own ‘Pity Party’, which of course gets me nowhere.

Better to learn from it and move forward with the ‘extra’ knowledge I’ve just gained as a result of having to go through the experience.

    Thanks for posting.

It is not an easy lesson to grasp that is forsure. It took me a while to figure this one out as well. It is amazing what we can learn and who we can become through challenges.

  14. Angela,

When I challenge comes my way, I always get a glance of what is over the brick wall which
    pushes me to work harder.

The harder I work, the faster I will bust down that brick wall.
