How Does Your Self Talk Influence Your Success?

When you find yourself mentally contemplating something in life or in business what are you saying to yourself? What are the thoughts and words running through your mind? What does your self talk sound like and how can it affect your success?
Your self talk can influence your success in every aspect of your life. For example if you are trying to lose weight do you say, “It is too hard I can’t do it, I don’t have time to work out”? If you want to work at home or own your own business is your self talk something like this “That is way too much work, I could never do it”? If your internal dialogue is negative like these examples you are setting yourself up for failure because you already believe that you can’t do it. As Henry Ford said, “Whether you think you can or whether you think you can’t you are right.”
Now let’s look at those same scenarios when your self talk is positive. If you are trying to lose weight and your self talk sounds like this, “I am willing to do whatever it takes to lose the weight; I know I will be successful.” Or you want to start your own business and your self talk sounds like this, “I will work as hard as I have to in my business to succeed, I am not going to let obstacles get in my way.” You are setting yourself up for much greater chances to succeed in anything you are trying to accomplish in life by being positive. Focusing on what you can do rather than being negative will push you much farther toward positive outcomes.
One of my favorite motivational speakers is Zig Ziglar and he says this, “Evidence is conclusive that your self-talk has a direct bearing on your performance” – Zig Ziglar. So if your self talk is primarily negative and you are failing that could be a big reason why. Let’s take a look at some ways you can change negative thinking.
Keep Notes in a Journal-
When negative thoughts are dominating your internal dialog write it down. This can be a very effective way to examine how you are feeling. Then you can start to see patterns of why you might be being negative and where you can make changes.
Have a physical Reminder to make you stop-
I don’t know if this was something that was done widespread but I knew of people who wore bracelets on their wrist. Every time they complained or said something negative they would switch the bracelet to the other wrist. It made them aware of when they were being negative and was a way to try and stop that behavior. I have also heard of people wearing rubber bands on their wrist and snapping it when they have a negative thought. This is a bit more extreme but if the result is a little bit of pain when you are negative it might better serve as a reminder to stop.
Change the way you make statements-
So we talked about weight loss and saying something like, “I can’t do this.” What if you took that negative statement and said something like, “How can I do this”? Turning it into a question completely changes the way you are looking at that situation.
The last thing I recommend would be to practice being positive and optimistic. Try to surround yourself with people who are upbeat and have a bright outlook.

Hi Angela,
great food for thought. When we have allowed a lot of negative conditioning to dominate our thinking it can take a while to change to more positive thinking. It is like the add we have here in New Zealand for shampoo: “It won’t happen over night, but it will happen.” Celebrating small successess is just as important as the big ones.

Hey Yorinda! I agree that it does take time to shift our thinking from negative to positive but it really can make such a big difference when you do. Thanks for your comment!

I have a tendency to over analyze something to determine my solutions. Such as the case with exercise, when I first started out I kept wondering if I was working hard enough because changes didn’t happen in that first month. I would review my journal and notes and from that figure out what I may need to do next.
