Failure is an Option but Not Trying is Not

Failure or Success

I think so many people let the fear of failure paralyze them.   The thought of trying something and falling short or failing seems scary.  We all worry about what other people think of us and to fail seems embarrassing.    If we let the fear of failure or embarrassment stand in our way it is going to be hard to achieve our dream life.

Why failure is an option-

When you fail it can propel you forward- Failure can be one of our greatest teachers.  I have failed in probably all areas of my life.  I have failed in love, in friendship, at work, and in business.  Failing at all those things while tough, has taught me some incredibly valuable lessons.  Because of those failures I have learned an immense amount about myself and also incredible things that have pushed me forward to success.   As one of my favorite author’s, Dale Carnegie puts it,  ”Develop success from failures.  Discouragement and failure are two of the surest stepping stones to success.”

Why not trying is not an option-

When you don’t try you don’t grow.  If you have not failed you probably have tried or gotten out of your comfort zone.    How are you going to get to success or reach any of your dreams if you don’t try?    I know that trying and struggling can be difficult but I think the struggle with regret is even tougher.  It is so worth it to try even if at first try you are not a success.

I just want to encourage you to not let the fear of failure keep you from going after all you want and deserve.  If you try and fail don’t give up, just take the lessons learn and readjust.

Hey Angela! Hope you’re having a great time with the festive season coming around!

Failure is a step towards success and yes. I’ve been a procrastinator for the longest time now and I know for a fact that not even attempting to take action is the worst road we can all go towards… which is where most people are, or else the world would be filled with people who all attain and achieve their dreams.

Only when you start taking action, will you learn from your mistakes and learn what suits you best. If you are never taking action on what you learn, this knowledge is as good as nothing. Take that leap of faith, you have nothing to lose if you do, but everything to gain. If you don’t, you nothing to lose, but nothing to gain. Taking action can only put you in a winning position, so choose which side of the team you want to be on.

Have a happy holiday Angela! ;)

Hey Darren! I agree you have to start taking action and learn along the way. Make mistakes, take corrective action and move on. Thanks for your comment!

    Perfect message Angela,
Learning lessons usually happen from our failures and mistakes. But not trying is very much not going to serve you. That would mean you’re sitting there, afraid to try anything, so there is no movement at all. We’ve got to remember how we learned things as kids, through trial and error, not perfection.

    Thanks Angela,
    Val :)

  3. Angela,

Your honest words are so valuable to anyone who may feel that they are out of options, that the future is bleak. Far too often, we look at the past to make decisions about our futures. In this way, we keep ourselves as victims of our pasts.

Only when we decide that we are opening a new chapter, with the limitless possibilities we knew when we were very young, can our lives make a positive change.

Yes, many excuses arise involving the “responsibility” of dreaming big. This is why, in my journey, I had to turn toward the guidance of many teachers. Spiritual teachers, mathematical teachers, physicists, the list goes on and on.

If someone wants to see a new life, all he or she needs to do is look for others who support this healthy way of thinking. We have absorbed far too much of society’s trends in our own mindsets. After only a short time of making new acquaintances (and thoughts), life proves what our hearts always knew.

The fun comes in conquering the lies and proving the truth. I would love to see you on my blog and hear your input on what you find. http://carriemarino.com/

All the best, Angela, and thanks for being one of the leaders for change,

I think you are right that so many people look at the past to make the decision about the future. The past should have no bearing on your future. You can do anything you want even if you have made mistakes or had a bad past. Thanks for your comment!

  4. Hi Angela,

This is a great post. So many people are so scared of failing that they do not even try. The way I see it, is if you do not try, you have already failed. At least when you try, you have a real chance at success! Thanks for sharing. :-)

  5. Angela,

I really enjoyed this post. It is very enlightening and since I have also failed at many areas of my life.

Some people just give up when they fail. Others live in an imaginary world, just living life and not trying to correct their mistakes.

I try to learn from my mistakes and turn it into something positive. I am an excuse maker and seem to blame everything on my A.D.D.

But I do try and make good in the end.

It is always “work in progress”.

    Have a great one :)

  6. Heres the good thing about success, it grows with you.
As you achieve success on one level is spurs you on to achieve success on other levels.

    Not trying is accepting failure.
Once you accept failure one level it is much easier to accept it on other levels.

    Its always better to try.

  7. Hi Angela,

Such a great point. It reminds me of something Jim Rohn said. It was said in fun, but the bottom line was that we learn more from failing than succeeding.

Failing is painful, and not generally fun while we’re in the middle of it. But it’s what we do AFTER we fail that makes all the difference in the world.

Hey Susanna! I love Jim Rohn and I agree with that 100% that we learn more by failing than succeeding. So true that what we do after failing that makes all the difference. We can either learn from it and move toward success or keep making the same mistakes.

They say the road to success is paved with failure. I believe that, and that it is not about how many times you get knocked down, but how many times you get up. Failure will either defeat you or it will become your springboard to success. Success is a choice on how we deal with failure.

How true. So many people are held back from huge success due to the fear of failure. They never step out and take action toward their dreams. I love the way John Maxwell puts it. He calls it “failing forward”. Always stepping out of your comfort zones and taking action toward your goals one failure at a time…..

    Hi Angela,

Fear can be a really powerful tool to propel us forward into taking positive, constructive action that we normally wouldn’t see. Fear presents amazing opportunities and when we don’t let it block us from trying something new the result can feel so rewarding, even elating! Dale Carnegie’s words are so wise: “Develop success from failures. Discouragement and failure are two of the surest stepping stones to success.” I truly believe this is one of the greatest ways to develop, learn and grow. I know I learn so much more when I’ve made a “mistake” or when a result didn’t appear positive at first. It’s just plain miraculous how what appears to be an error or mistake can turn into the most positively amazing result ever! Thanks for sharing your inspiring article! Loren

Hi Angela, this is an older post but the title caught my eye. You said “why not trying is not an option – when you don’t try you don’t grow.”

I’ve never heard it put quite like that, but it makes sense. Failure can be a great teacher if you let it, but not trying can never help anything.

    Thanks!

You make a great point Angela. it is not ok to give up it reminds me of a quote a like a lot. ”
If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. Then quit. No use being a damn fool about it.” W.C. Fields.
But at least you made an effort. So its never good to give up.
