Network Marketers – Don’t Forget the Trusted and True 5 W’s of Marketing
I think as Network Marketers we tend to forget about the 5 W’s of marketing. The who, what, when, where, why of our target customer and prospect. If you take some time and thing over these 5 factors and ask yourself these questions your marketing could much more effective. Let’s take a look at the 5 W’s.
Who-In order to market effectively you have to know who you are marketing to. Who might be interested in what you are offering? Are you going after the right market rather than casting your net far and wide and getting people who have no interest in your product or company. Are you alienating friends or family by your marketing tactics? Figure out who exactly needs and wants your product.
What- What need, want and desire does your company or product fulfill? What are your customers out there looking for? What do you and your company have to offer that is different than the next company? What do you have that other distributors in your company don’t? What sets you apart from the competition?
When- Is your marketing relevant to the timing of people looking for it? If you are in a health and wellness company for example you want to time your marketing for everyone looking to change because of their New Years resolutions.
Where- Where will you find your prospects and customers? Where do people looking for your product and services hang out? If you are marketing to moms you might look at moms forums or moms groups. Put some thought into where you can find your prefect customer and prospect.
Why- Why would your prospect or customer want what you have to offer? Why would they choose your company or service?
These are some great things to think through for every marketing campaign you are doing for your business. Another great set of marketing tools is the 4 C’s taught by Diane Hochman. Hi Angela,
Great post
I’ve been a network marketer for a very long time. I am certainly from the old school, and I pride myself of not only being a good trainer, but also a good student.
This is the very first time i seen the 5 Ws presented as training for network marketing. Good stuff.
BTW, you have a very impressive blog.

Hey Guy! I appreciate the compliment on the blog. That is great that you are both a trainer and a student. I think that is a great way to grow, be open to learning but also share what you know. I am glad you found the 5 W’s good stuff for network marketing.

Hi Angela,
A super effective list of questions to ask here.
Build your marketing campaign around these queries. Avoid the common error of publishing a website and thinking “if you build it, they will come.” Sure, some people might show up. But who are “they”? Random traffic that is far from targeted.
As you note forget casting your net far and wide. Be efficient with your time by determining exactly who wants your product or service. The more specific you get the better, for establishing clarity in your campaign helps you to laser target your niche.
The “Why” might be the most important question to ask. We move into action for a reason, and this reason is rooted in the “Why.” Pinpoint these emotions behind the “Why” and you will be able to attract prospects with greater ease.
Thanks for sharing your insight Angela.

Hi Angela,
Great reminder!
If we don’t narrow things down as much as possible, it’s like shooting in the dark. We never know what we’re going to hit. That’s how network marketing has gotten such a bad rap.
It’s time to sit down and answer those questions before going out there and spamming everyone and their brother.
Thanks for putting out the info on Diane Hochman’s calls. She’s a powerful “get it done” motivator.

Yes, exactly if you don’t narrow it down it is like shooting in the dark and you won’t have much success. You are welcome on the info on Diane’s call. She has great info that really can help people who are in network marketing or any small business.

I’m a fan of the five W’s and I like the way you show a simple visual.
I think the key with the “why” is answering both why should your customer care, and why should you. I think that the inspiration shines through, as well as creates bridges in terms of values, and is a quick integrity check.

I love using the 5-W’s plus throw in “How” to asses the majority of situations.
I like using the 5-W’s when writing a blog post. Who is going to be interested in What I have to say, When is the best time to send that message, Where am I going to syndicate it and Why is the message important for me to say and How am I going to structure the blog post to get my message out in the most clear and concise manner?

Hi Angela. Really interesting to consider these major questions. I am in the process myself of actually developing a detailed business plan. I suppose a lot of home business owners don’t truly realize that we are operating a BUSINESS, and that this needs careful planning and goals. I naively thought when I first began that I would only have to figure out how to use the internet and that the rest would take of itself. NOT TRUE.
Write a daily scheduled action list. Create a three year plan and make a list of short and long term objectives. Getting concrete on these is my current task. Thanks for the link to the ‘Home and Small Business Network.’ I will have to look into it.
It’s also interesting to think about Attraction Marketing when it comes to addressing the Who’s. If we stay true to ourselves and create trust by creating material that reflects our own individual passions – then do we really need to consider the Who? Will we not simply ”Attract” those who resonate with who we are and what we embody? I don’t know. Do you?
Thanks again! How long have you been marketing by the way? Have a great and productive week!

Hey Angela!
Thank you for the reminder and the clarification what the W’s are standing for. The When you mentioned is a good point too because the current economy lets drift a lot of people to the Internet to find answers. As Ryan mentioned above the Why together with the When can become very powerful when you distribute your message at the right spot online AND offline.
Great blog and I look forward to come over more often!
All the best,
Alex

HI Angela,
These are certainly worthy points to look for when putting a campaign together. I always find ti interesting that most Network Marketing companies promote their products as good for everyone, whil in fact most people have not the slightest interest! Better to go for a narrow market you know are looking for solutions than to take a borad brush approach. My solution is lots of niche marketing systems.

Hey Angela,
Thank you so much for putting this together. I feel a great deal of marketers never seem to understand the basic principles surrounding “good marketing”. Most of the time, new people to the industry are so busy thinking about selling, that they are never really taught how to actually solve peoples issues.
That simply takes the hard selling out of the equation.
The funny thing is, this important information will forever continue to change and improve. Meaning, the more you learn about solving others problems and issues, the more solutions you end up providing.
Thanks, great post!

I was reading your post and realized that there is so many advantages when people understand just how powerful the 5 Ws really are. Each W has a purpose and I can really use them to find where people that want my products are and what I need to offer to have more people want my products. So many important words in such a short post. Thanks Angela!
