Important Lessons I’ve Learned from my dogs

I have 2 awesome dogs that make everyday fun and special.  I can’t imagine life without my dogs, somehow my furry friends feel like my best buddies some days.

You can learn so much from owning a dog, they are great teachers and show such great love.   I think having a pet can teach you great lessons that make you a better person.  I am sure anyone who is a pet owner can relate.

Treat everyone like they are special-My dogs practically throw a ticker tape parade every time I come home.  Now I could have gone out just to the mailbox and I am received the same way, even though I was gone for a few minutes. That makes me feel loved and special.  No human has ever got that excited when I was gone for 2 minutes and came back.  Maybe as humans we are not capable of having that much excitement that often but I do think we can make more of an effort.  It would be great if we could make an effort daily to greet people with genuine enthusiam.

Take time to have some fun and play- You can just see the excitement of my dogs when they get to run, play and go for walks.  Working is great but as the saying goes, “all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”.   Take some time off to play and enjoy yourself.

Live in the moment- Dogs live for the here and now and have no way of getting excited for the future of living in the past.  They take everyday and moment as it comes and adjust themselves to it.  We can learn to be very happy by living in the moment and not dwelling on the past or spending everyday looking forward.  It is good to have plans but life is too short to not enjoy and relish living in the moment.

Don’t be afraid to show your emotions- If you are happy do not be afraid to show it.  It is so fun to watch a happy dog squirm, shake, wag their tail(even if it broke a whole set of glasses) and do a little dance of joy.  Let loose and do not be afraid to show your emotions.

Do not pass judgement- Dogs love you no matter if you are in pj’s or a business suit, they don’t care how you look.  They don’t care about your past, how much money you make, what size you are, what kind of car you drive(as long as they can stick their heads out of the window) or what neighborhood you live in.  They love you unconditionally no matter what and do not judge you by how you look or what you own.  We could take a lesson from this and learn to not judge people by what they posses or how they look.

Be loyal- Dogs are so loyal and loving to their owners.  The show gratitude by their affection and sloppy kisses.  Be loyal and kind to others and show your gratitude and affection.

Be slow to anger and quick to love-  My dogs are so good to put up with our son crawling over and playing with them.  They don’t get angry over little things or really anything for that matter.  They give you attention and kisses at every chance they get.  This is a great way to live life, loving as much as possible and not letting little things get you angry.

What have you learned from your dog?

This is so adorable. Thank you for sharing these insightful tips. They are so funny, but at the same time, so true. It is good for us to step back once in a while and look at life’s basics. We get so caught up in the details that we forget that most people would just like to be treated special.

I think smiling at people we meet, whether we know them or not, is another way of being like our dogs. Thanks for this fun post with a great message.

I love to watch my ‘real life’ dog, Mackenzie, stand on the back steps and just sniff the air. The simplicity of a dog is something I can only hope to grasp. So simple that some days, I just don’t understand her. what great companions we have in our dogs. Thanks for asking.

I loved this post. I own a boson terrier and love him to death. My sisters boyfriend had a 1 year old boston terrier. They are soooo much fun together! They are both here at our home right now.

I have learned A LOT from my dogs. About 6 years ago I made a pretty major mistake and was swinging a practice club (the david leadbetter swing setter) inside the house. My dog came flying in and I nailed him right in the eye. It was bleeding and it eventually had to be taken out. His eyelid got sewn shut.

But, you know what? He acts just like a normal dog would act. He acts very similar to Dave, the other Boston Terrier. He was incredibly strong during the tough time, but could careless about having one eye. He is dealing with what was given to him. I made a mistake, but was able to move on. My dog also moved on and has lived a vibrant life for the past 6 years.

I have learned to live life with what you have. You never know what is going to happen one minute from now. Sure, its safe to say a lot of things but you truly never know. I would have NEVER predicted that my dog would have his eye hanging out of his socket just a minute into my golf practicing inside the house…

This makes me want to play with my dogs more often! They are truly too awesome ;)
