How to Do Better Than Your Best and Create Success

Learning to Become Better Than Your Personal Best to Create Success

This is an exciting topic because you achieve great success when you learn to become better than your best.  I was recently listening to Jim Rohn’s, “The Art to Exceptional Living,”  and in it he shares a great way to improve beyond your best.  I wanted to share this to push you a little because I think sometimes we work on ourselves to a point and then hit a plateau and stop.  If you continue pushing the limits and work past your personal best imagine where you could go.

In Jim’s Rohn’s book he uses push-ups as an example for learning to do better than your best.  He says for instance if right now the best you can do when you do push-ups is to do 5, you do 5.  But then you rest and you can do 5 more, rest and do 5 more.  Eventually you might be able to do 10 push-ups before you have to rest, then eventually 20 and so on.  The best that you can do right now does not have to mean it will always be the best that you can do.  You can get better and improve with time and continued effort.

If you think that you are at your best right now don’t stop.  Try to keep growing, learning and getting better and your can far exceed what you best is at the moment. We can always be challenging ourselves to push our boundaries and growing to new levels.  When you think you have done your best get into the habit of asking yourself, “how can I do even better next time.”

So I challenge you if you think you are at your best to keep working and pushing.  Even if you have reached your personal best there is still room for improvement.  I love how St. Jerome put it, “Good, better, best never let it rest.  ‘Til your good is better and your better is best.”

  1. Great topic Angela. There is this really impressive little exercise that I used to use in training sessions – from a standing position, arms at your sides – lift your right arm straight out, pointing your finger … without moving your body below the waist, rotate your arm and upper body as far as you can to the right. You’ll end up pointing somewhere behind you – focus on where you stopped and pick out a target – maybe a fixture or spot on the wall just to pinpoint a reference of exactly you stopped.

Now – stand facing forward again, arms at your side. Close your eyes and picture that spot where you stopped, and then picture going beyond that spot at least 10% further. Then we go through the initial exercise again and each time I’ve done this – 100% of the participants were able to go the extra 10% or even further!

It’s a fun exercise that is a great way to warm up a group.

Hi Angela! What a great post – I just love your entire blog and the information you have shared with everyone. I have so much to learn about my own blog and I continue to learn more and more every day about marketing with blogs, social networks, etc.

Which gets me to the article at hand … making yourself better. This is so very true – I am an advocate of continuing education – my parents always taught me that you can never learn too much, and this is so true. Every time I think I know everything I need to know to do whatever it is I’m working on at the time, I come across a blog or website where I learn even more!

You can never learn too much – the more you know, the more of a success you will be at whatever you are doing – no matter what business you are in.

Thank you for sharing … keep on teaching us! :)
