3 Ways to Avoid Distractions In Business
The sun was shining, the birds were signing and I was enjoying the beauty on my bike ride until….wham, I hit the pavement and laid there looking at the sky. I was not hurt but I was stunned and shaken. I took my eyes off my destination, got distracted by something that was to my side. I was not focused ahead of me and I wound up paying the price.
I think distractions in business are a little like my biking mishap. You take your eyes of your goals and destination and you wind up derailed wondering what the heck happened. It is easy to do and I think this happens to the majority of us. I have some suggestions on how to minimize this problem.
3 tips for avoiding distractions in business
- Map your course and figure out your destination. It is easy to lose focus if you don’t know where you want to end up and you haven’t figured out how to get there. Like Lewis Carroll said, “if you don’t know where you are going any road will get you there.” Distractions in business are likely to happen if you don’t know where you are going because you have no clear vision of where you want to end up. Having goals and creating to do lists help immensely. Another thing is getting clear about what you should avoid, I wrote a post about putting together a “To Don’t List”.
- Never quit. When you encounter dead ends, speed bumps, steep climbs, and detours in your business don’t give up. At some point everyone encounters these distractions in business. Facing challenges is normal but you can’t give up when times get tough. Expect difficulties and take those difficulties and figure out how you can learn and grow from them.
- Do only what you are passionate about. You will find you have more distractions in business if you are not enjoying what you do. Other things will catch your eye and keep you from staying focused. It is better to take some time to figure out what you are passionate about then jump into something and then keep jumping around from thing to thing.
Distractions in business will happen but the more of them you can eliminate the faster you will get to your destination.

Hi Angela,
Distractions are always there. When you say make a list I absolutely agree. I do lists all the time to keep me focused. There are so many things that happen during the day, not only business related, but life itself. We need to make time for that otherwise we experience overwhelm.
Your point on “Never Quit” says it all. As in anything you try to accomplish there will be ebbs and tides. But never give up and you will get to your destination.
Great insperation!

Encountering distractions in anything, including in business…is inevitable. Those who succeed can steer true toward their goals without having problems. They probably are always experienced with having succumbed to distractions. However, these are all great tips.

Great message Angela. I’ve been doing a lot of research recently on living with intention and practicing mindfulness and it seems that relates very well to the tips you’ve provided above. Life these days is filled with distraction and it requires our being intentional about how we want to spend each precious day. I lose myself in busyness from time to time like anyone, but I think it’s important to make the effort to create more memorable moments each day. Thanks!

Angela,
You hit on so many great points, and I think the most important one is being clear and focused. As Janet Bray Attwood says, “When you are clear, what you want will show up in your life and ONLY to the extent you are clear.” Simple, to the point and accurate.
I like the idea of being passionate about what you do. We help people get clear on their passions, they get excited and distractions are a thing of the past.
Appreciate your thoughts. Thanks.

Hi Angela,
All three of your suggestions to avoid distractions are great.
1) Map your course and figure out your destination. I have a clear vision of where I am going so when the distractions occur, I can bypass them because I know where I am heading.
2) Never quit….even when I am bombarded with distraction, I keep moving forward because my goals are clear. I love the saying from Galaxy Quest when Tim Allen says, “Never surrender! Never Give Up!”
3) Do only what you are passionate about. I feel this is the most important of the three. I am passionate about what I do. I am committed and driven and LOVE what I do. As long as my passion is there, ( I know it will always be there), I am able to avoid most distractions (Once in awhile, there is something that might get me off track…a little…haha) and keep going!
Great suggestions and solid tips!
