Get in An Environment That Will Help You Thrive

Thrive

Sometimes life’s greatest lessons come from the strangest places.
I learned an interesting fact about sharks today and it is a great analogy
for our personal growth and development.

What I learned is that sharks are very adaptable and grow
to a size that is only as big as their surroundings allow.
When a shark is put into a tank it will only grow to a
size appropriate for that space.  A shark in a small tank
may only be inches long fully developed.  Now put a shark
in an ocean and it has space to grow, there is nothing
limiting the size it can grow.

I think this is similar to how some humans never seem to do much
while some people thrive and create an amazing life. If we choose
environments that don’t challenge us, keep us in our comfort zone
and surround ourselves with people who don’t build us up we will stay small.

If we choose to expand our horizons and do things that challenge us,
get ourselves out of our comfort zone and surround ourselves
with people who will push us there is no limiting how big we can grow.

So what environment are you choosing?
Are you staying in places that will keep you small or are you willing
to get in a environment that will help you thrive?

To living life by design!

Great point Angela – that was a fact that I knew long ago, but you connected it to human beings very well. Our mindset will either take us to success or lead us to failure based on our own beliefs!

Well Angela , I must say that I do both.. There are some things in my life that I could do without.. but I haven’t given up yet.. and there are some thing that help me thrive in a big way… Working on eliminating those not so helpful pieces to my environment..

Great article.. and analogy!! I knew that about sharks but didn’t put it together like you did!

I liked the shark analogy. To grow we must get in the environment that will makes us grow the most as individuals and professionals.

  6. Hi Angela,

That’s so true what you’re saying here.

I would also add that if you create an environment of broke people around you so will you. That’s why it is said that you are making about the same salary than the 5 people closest to you. Choose to hang out with millionaires, with high spirited people, with smart people, etc… and so will you become as well.

    Thanks for this post :)

    Hi Angela!

Great to see you back! You know TSA members are all here with open arms. This is an interesting article using sharks as an analogy to moving out of our comfort zone. I’ve chosen to push as hard as I can and do whatever it takes to make the changes I need to create a wonderful future. Recently, I have done many things that have made me feel very uncomfortable. I’ve taken risks and I’m doing things I never thought I would ever do. I am working on surrounding myself with people who support my cause and the internet community has been wonderful. I transitioned from a completely different life and it has been interesting, exciting, and at times a little scary…but I know all of it will be worth it! Great post!

  8. Angela, I have to admit that I am cleaning my environment right now. It just seems to be that season of life for me. I am unwilling to take less that what is absolutely healthy for me…and I am so glad that you shared this with us and challenged us to grow as human beings and as business owners. Great post…truly valuable!

Wow- really great! Short and straight to the point. This post is incredibly meaningful and made me do a double take on the people and the environment I surround myself with. I will be putting it to use straight away. What’s great about the internet, is you can surround yourself with groups of people who also like a challenge, who are also growing, and this is a huge contrast to the people you may encounter on an average day in your life. Thanks again!

  10. That’s powerful… I didn’t know that. Although I’m sure if they grew bigger than their tank, there would be problems…. lol.

That’s why when you push yourself… as much as possible and do something that scares you each day, you grow incredibly… most people stagnate and get frustrated as they aren’t reaching their potential!

    Great to see you back,
    Gavin

  11. Great post, Angela! I really like the analogy of the shark only growing as big as its environment allows. One thing that I have wondered about that (and something that may help with the human analogy) is whether or not there is a point where growing ends for sharks, or if they can be put into bigger tanks and get bigger as that happens.

  12. Hi Angela, this is a really good analogy! I never looked at sharks that way, and certainly didn’t know their growth was restricted when in a tank. Sharks are majestic creatures, it’s no wonder they look so much more magical underwater (I’m a scuba diver)

Luckily for me, the first time I saw a large shark was after I’d been educated about them. That particularly shark was harmless to humans simply because his/her mouth was the wrong shape to eat us! I saw 7 of them on that one dive, nearly got a great photo of one, but my husband got in the way when he was entranced, he tried to go over and touch it!

Sorry to turn the conversation back onto the sharks instead of talking about their “growth relationship” to human growth Angela, I couldn’t help it:-)

Aloha Angela, what a wonderful analogy and you know I believe it applies to my fresh water gold fishes. They will grow only to a certain size and stay that way for as long as I’ve been looking at them. But when I go to the pet store the same breed is bigger. Lol

I enjoyed your post and you know our environment at times can keep us where we are at, so I think at times we need to change areas to become more of another environment. I’m glad I came by. Mahalo, Lani :)

  14. Great analogy Angela! In fact I know a little something about sharks in captivity since I headed marketing and the educational programs for a reqional aquarium for 5 years … Tiger sharks, one of the great open ocean preditors, are extremely rare in captivity because limiting their freedom will in a matter of months cause them to experience emotional and physical anguish and they will die if not returned to the open ocean. I think a lot of us can relate to that fundamental need for ‘freedom.’
